Jonah and the Big Fish (Running from God)

Jonah and the Big Fish (Running from God)

Book of Jonah (NIV)

God told Jonah to go to the great city of Nineveh and preach against its wickedness. But Jonah didn't want to go. He boarded a ship heading the opposite direction.

God sent a violent storm. The sailors were terrified and cast lots to see who was responsible. The lot fell on Jonah. He admitted he was running from God and told them to throw him overboard to calm the sea. Reluctantly, they did.

Immediately, the sea grew calm. But God had prepared a huge fish to swallow Jonah. He spent three days and three nights in the belly of the fish. There, Jonah prayed and repented. The fish vomited him onto dry land.

God spoke to Jonah again: β€œGo to Nineveh.” This time Jonah obeyed. He preached a simple message: β€œForty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown!” The people believed God, from the greatest to the least. Even the king declared a fast and called everyone to repentance. God saw their actions and relented from destroying them.

Jonah was angry that God showed mercy. But God taught him that He cares for all people – even those we think don't deserve it.

Moral: You cannot outrun God's call. And His mercy is for everyone.
