David and Goliath – A Boy Who Defeated a Giant

David and Goliath – A Boy Who Defeated a Giant

1 Samuel 17 (NIV)

The Philistine army had a giant warrior named Goliath. He was over nine feet tall, wearing heavy armor and carrying a massive spear. Every day for forty days, Goliath challenged the Israelite army to send out a man to fight him. King Saul and all his soldiers were terrified.

A young shepherd named David came to visit his brothers in the army. When he heard Goliath's insult to the living God, David was angry. He said, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

David refused the king's armor. Instead, he took his shepherd's staff, five smooth stones from a stream, and his sling. He ran toward Goliath. The giant laughed and cursed him. But David replied, “You come against me with sword and spear, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty.”

David slung a stone that struck Goliath on the forehead. The giant fell face down. David then took Goliath's own sword and cut off his head. When the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.

Moral: God does not look at your size or strength. He looks at your heart and faith. With God, even the biggest giants can be defeated.
