The Creation Story

Genesis 1:1-31; 2:1-3 (NIV)

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and empty, and darkness covered the deep waters. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.

Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light "day" and the darkness "night." And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.

On the second day, God created the sky. On the third day, he gathered the waters to create dry land, and he created plants and trees. On the fourth day, God created the sun, moon, and stars. On the fifth day, he created fish and birds. On the sixth day, God created land animals and, finally, he created mankind in his own imageβ€”male and female he created them.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. On the seventh day, God rested from all his work and blessed the seventh day, making it holy.
